TEEN'S BIKE RIDE FROM VANCOUVER TO SAN FRAN TO BENEFIT SICK KIDS IN HOSPITALS
He's 'pedaling' awareness of NHL Hall-of-Famer Pat LaFontaine's charity foundation that builds game rooms in children’s hospitals Huntington, NY, July 18, 2007 – High School student Kent Gillin of Long Island, NY will spend most of August doing something that most teenagers would never even dream of. He’ll be pedaling his bicycle from Vancouver, BC to San Francisco, CA. His trek begins on August 5th and will cover 1,045 miles.
Gillin was born with multiple health challenges and his parents were told that he would probably never be able to walk. But thanks to the extraordinary efforts of some dedicated teachers and therapists, Kent began walking at age 3-1/2 and he hasn’t stopped since. In an effort to “pay forward” the kindness shown him, Kent is hoping to raise awareness for the charity of Hall of Fame hockey player Pat LaFontaine. The Companions in Courage Foundation (www.CiC16.org) works with Microsoft Corporation and Cisco Systems to build interactive game rooms in children’s hospitals throughout North America.
"The K-Man is a special kid who has his priorities in the right place," said LaFontaine. "I'm so proud to call him a companion in courage." Gillin will average more than 60 miles per day and he plans on crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on Thursday, August 23rd. He will be joined on the ride by his dad, Paul, who said, "I get to spend three weeks with my son, which is a gift few receive." The pair have been training near their Long Island home in preparation for the test of endurance.
