NHL FOUNDATION DONATES $25,000 TO PAT
LAFONTAINE'S COMPANIONS IN COURAGE FOUNDATION
New York, June 7, 2001 - The National Hockey
League announced today a commitment of $25,000
to the Companions In Courage Foundation
established by Pat LaFontaine, a five-time NHL
All Star and one of professional sports' most
caring athletes.
Companions In Courage Foundation supports
children's hospitals across North America
through fund-raising and other programs designed
to enhance the lives of young victims of
childhood cancer and other illnesses.
In addition to his establishment of Companions
In Courage Foundation, LaFontaine also serves as
the national spokesperson for the NHL's Hockey's
All-Star Kids, a League-wide initiative with
children's hospitals in the United States and
Canada. As part of Hockey's All-Star Kids, the
NHL has designated 30 NHL team captains to lead
player visits to local children's hospitals as
well as spearhead fund-raising efforts within
the community to benefit children with cancer
and other diseases. Hockey's All-Star Kids is in
place in all 30 NHL markets, and is a joint NHL
and NHL Players' Association charity.
LaFontaine, whose stellar NHL career spanned 15
seasons (NY Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, NY
Rangers) has authored the book, Companions In
Courage: Triumphant Tales of Heroic Athletes,
which shares his story and those of other
athletes. The stories, rooted in overcoming
obstacles, provide powerful lessons that
transcend the playing field. All proceeds from
book sales will be donated to the Companions In
Courage Foundation.
LaFontaine is available to media as an in-studio
guest or via phone for interviews to talk about
Companions In Courage and Hockey's All-Star
Kids. To schedule time, please contact the NHL
Office in New York.
